BPMN 101 – Simple Example

Understanding Business Process Modelling (BPMN) is crucial for the BA. BPMN is the graphical representation of work. This is how the BA understands the business problem to be solved. You need to understand the nature of the work your stakeholders are performing. Especially in the age of RPA – in order to automate you will need to first understand the nature of the work of the stakeholder. In the video below i discuss some of the Basics of BPMN with the help of a simple Example. Making a Tea.

In the video we limit our discussion to

  • Swimlanes (Which role is responsible for the Activities)
  • Start Event (What Event Triggered the Process)
  • Activities (what Activities where performed to produce the output)
  • Intermediate Event (Timer event)
  • Decision Gateway (Exclusive Gateway Yes / No)
  • End Event (The Event that concludes the Process)

All BPMN Processes are bound to time. All work performed occurs in a specified time frame. And all BPMN Processes have a Goal. If there is no goal then there is no reason to perform the activities.
